The history of the Mooncoin GAA club began with the official founding of the club in 1886. Both codes of practice namely hurling and football were created in the village.

Mooncoin are extremely proud of their long and proud Kilkenny tradition, but this pride is not their without very good reason.  If we look at Mooncoin's contribution to Kilkenny's victory in the 1909 championship it is truely remarkable. Ten Mooncoin men played in the All Ireland final when Kilkenny beat Tipperary in the Cork Athletic Ground. However on their way to that victory 16 Mooncoin men (17 a side) played for Kilkenny against Derry in the All Ireland semi final.  The ten mooncoin representatives who played in the all Ireland final were Bill Henebery, Jim Dunphy, Dick Doherty, Jimmy Kelly & Dick Doyle. The Kilkenny team lined out in the Mooncoin jerseys on that day.
